Bermuda Marathon 2014

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI have more to write about my post-event adventures but I feel like I need to write something about the event itself before it becomes forgotten. The marathon/half marathon is the last of the 3 events – 1mile run on Friday, 10k on Saturday, and Half/Full on Sunday. Participating in the 3 events means you’re up to the challenge. I only opted to do the marathon – I have other things planned for this trip.

I picked up my bib on Saturday, a bit late I guess because there was nothing left in the pickup area – just the bib and the shirt. That’s it about the bib pickup.

Sunday – event day. The start/finish area was still being set up around 7am, the race starts at 8am. This is how small this event is compared to the others I’ve done. Most of the participants I’ve noticed were doing the Half/ Half Challenge. I’ve only seen just a few doing the Marathon/Marathon Challenge. Weather was way better compared to yesterday when the 10k participants got soaked in rain. This is an event where you have to bring all your nutrition because there is only water/gatorade about 2.5miles apart. I only have 2 gels + 6 salt tablets so I controlled my intake of these – 1 salt tablet every other pit stop. The course is a loop (2x for the marathoners) of the city, and is very hilly (the whole island is hilly). There was not a lot of spectators/cheerers but the people of Bermuda were very supportive. The 2nd loop was a lonely run to the finish. At times, it was just you and the road, no one ahead, no one behind you. Good to have some mantra to keep you focused. 3:48 hrs after, I was done. Got my medal, walked to keep the blood flowing. Post food was adequate – muffins/soup/flavored water/gatorade.

Spent some extra hours in the city, then took the bus back to the hotel. Another day, another run. Same left leg with knee issue. Oh well.

Monday – post marathon. As suspected, my left knee bothered me. I went to the beach – knee deep cold water therapy. Also did some yoga/stretching. Cancelled original plan to get a pedal bike and rented a scooter instead. And the real adventures started…
