Barkley Fall Classic – 2019 Edition

September 21, 2019 Focus on what you have … Prologue. The first sign that this day was going to be great was this – You were following the long line of vehicles slowly moving to get to the event’s parking lot. You were the last one allowed to get in. The rest was directed to the park’s parking lot, which was half-a-mile away. And having a small car, you got the best parking space next to the event’s staging tent. Score! Then, while putting everything on, and prepping for the start, you realized you missed your supplementary nutrition – your … Continue reading Barkley Fall Classic – 2019 Edition

Eastern States 100

Prologue. If someone would have asked me weeks, or even months, before this event if I could run a sub 3:50 marathon, the answer would have been a ‘No’. I have not been running before this event. I had better weekly mileage when I was training for a marathon. But no worries, it’s part of the plan. “Can you hike Eastern States 100, with minimal and very slow running, and still finish?” I can say now that you can, because I have done it. The Plan. Like I’ve said, I have not been running before this event. Don’t get me … Continue reading Eastern States 100

Whiteface Sky Race

July 21, 2019. Still the hardest short distance race I have ever done. 15 miles with 8k feet of elevation gain. And most of that 8k feet of elevation gain comes from under 5 miles of ascent. 2.3 miles climb up Whiteface Mtn with 3.3k feet gain, then 2.3 miles down back to the base. Twice. Oh yes, you get a break in between. 5+ miles to recover on a considerably flatter trail. 5+ miles to ponder whether the body is still willing to go up that 2.3 miles again, and 2.3 down. 2 years ago, I did this event. … Continue reading Whiteface Sky Race

MR54 – Not Another Race Report

This is the 3rd time I have done Manitou’s Revenge 54 Miler, aka MR54. I have created race reports the previous years I’ve done it. This year, I decided not to create Yet Another Race Report. Why? The race itself has not changed since the past 2 years that I have done it. The course remains the same, from start to finish, and every aid stations in between, mile per mile. If you want to have detailed info on the course (and my experience tackling this event), please check my previous posts in 2017 and 2018. So this year, I … Continue reading MR54 – Not Another Race Report

A Marathon, In A Day’s Notice

Friday, May 10th. A conversation between friends. Friend1: Hey, do you want to run a marathon? Friend2 (aka Idiot, aka Me): When? Friend1: This weekend (means tomorrow, Saturday) Friend2: Sure, why not. I’m not doing anything tomorrow… (without thinking logically) A spontaneous decision – an exciting weekend adventure! After crossing 5 states and 8 hours on the road, the idiot realized the idiocy of the idea … Arriving before midnight at the hotel, tired but couldn’t sleep because of the effect of caffeine while driving, only to wake up at 5 am to run 26.2 miles! Who the crap thinks … Continue reading A Marathon, In A Day’s Notice

Barkley Fall Classic – 2018 Edition

September 15, 2018. Prologue – An Opinion. There are those who came to do the 50k, and failed. There are those who came to do the marathon, and succeeded. One runner came with a mindset to do the 50k, and failed. And settled for a marathon finish.  Another came with a mindset to do the marathon, and succeeded. Now, who is the more deserving participant? Both finished the marathon.  But there’s a difference.  The first one came and tried, failing in the process.  The second one came and succeeded, but he actually failed even before the start of the race. … Continue reading Barkley Fall Classic – 2018 Edition

Breakneck Point Marathon

September 8, 2018. New Date. New Venue. New Course. Same Level of Difficulty. New Date. This event was in April in 2017. Because of scheduled trail maintenance in the area in the early part of the year, the date was moved to September in 2018. We actually got a break from weather this year. The whole week prior to race day was a torturous heatwave. There was a day when I had to stop a scheduled run after just a mile and walked back home because I was already soaking and uncomfortable. Mother nature gave us the blessing on race … Continue reading Breakneck Point Marathon

LT100 Run Race – DNF

August 18, 2018. Leadville 100 Trail Run Race. DNF. If the altitude does not hit you, the aggressive race aid station cut-offs will. This is LT100 Run Race. If you DNF-ed in a race because you missed the cut-off, without any injuries or because of medical reasons, you just didn’t train enough for this race. Plain and simple. I am not being harsh (at least to myself), I am just stating the fact. This is what I was thinking when I was hiking down back to Twin Lakes aid station after being cut at Hope Pass, or more popularly know … Continue reading LT100 Run Race – DNF

First Impression – Naked Running Band

Wow!  No bounce.  Really. My order from RunningWarehouse just arrived today.  And I took it for a quick 6 miler.  I stuffed things in it – 600ml flask, gels, more gels, phone, and went for a run.  I did some strides, jogged, sprinted, and settled on my tempo speed.  No bounce.  Really. And because of that, I made this post right after the quick test run.  I’ll update this post after my upcoming 100 miler experience with the Naked Running Band. I first saw the Naked Running Band when I was searching for a waist band for ultra running.  I … Continue reading First Impression – Naked Running Band

Manitou’s Revenge 54 Mile Ultra

June 23-24, 2018. MR54 Mile Ultra. “Does it make it easier the second time around?” Hell, No! “Does it make is sweeter the second time around?” Oh Yeah! I’ve done this last year – read the experience here. The goal this year is the same goal I’ve set last year. I didn’t achieve the goal last year, but was happy to have finished without any injuries. Would it be different this year? MR54 – a point-to-point 54.3 mile ultra from Windham, NY @ CD Lane Park to Phoenicia, NY @ downtown Parish Hall, traversing the technical trails of the Long … Continue reading Manitou’s Revenge 54 Mile Ultra
