Fall Hike – Bear Mountain

October 5, 2019. Fall is here. Trees letting go of their leaves. But rather than simply letting their leaves fall to the ground, they decided to give a magic show. Perhaps to encourage folks to ignore the cold mornings and short daytime to still find time to be outside. “Bet I can make you go outside if I make my leaves turn from green to yellow to red before they hit the ground. It’s only available for a short period so come out and see this magic show, I call – The Changing Colors of Fall“ “And it’s free!” You … Continue reading Fall Hike – Bear Mountain

TNF Bear Mtn 50K

May 5, 2018.  The North Face Endurance Challenge – Bear Mtn 50K Before the start… “I want to finish this in ___ hours” At the first aid station… “I feel great. I can definitely finish this in ___ hours” At some point in the middle of the race, when the body starts complaining… “Hmmm, maybe I can still finish this in ___ hours” More miles and time after, when the walking becomes more than running… “It’s alright, I am still within my backup goal of ___ hours” And some more miles later, when everything hurts, and the mind began to … Continue reading TNF Bear Mtn 50K

Bear Mountain Trails, Part 2

Saturday, May 28, 2016. 2 birds in 1 stone, my Saturday plan.  Or should I say, 2 bears in 1 day – Bear Mountain that is. Since the first BM Trails exploration, I’ve been craving for another trail experience.  But at the same time, I  needed to spend some time on the saddle for a triathlon training.  So, I decided to do both – bike up Bear Mountain to Perkins Tower, and then switch gears and hike the trails afterwards. Saturday morning.  I parked at the RD/TT trail head on 9W, and started the ride before 8AM.  This part of … Continue reading Bear Mountain Trails, Part 2

Exploring the Bear Mountain Trails

Sunday. May 8, 2016. 15+ miles covered exploring the Bear Mountain trails.  Ok – I didn’t really plan to cover this distance.  It just happened because I kept on intentionally making myself lost in the trails.  This was my first time exploring these trails and I only had the Avenza PDF Map App as my guide, which served me well.  The plan was to go back to Bear Mountain and re-trace the trail leading back to Timp Pass, the last steep climb in the TNF ECS BM event I did on April 30th.  I wanted to have a picture of … Continue reading Exploring the Bear Mountain Trails

Avenza PDF Maps App

Another positive review on a product I use – because it works!  This one I’d consider a necessity for exploring trails, especially when going solo.  This is for the the Avenza PDF Maps Mobile App, available for Android and iOS smartphones.  I have this on my phone, plus the digital maps of the trails I wanted to explore.  One of the maps I have is the Bear Mountain Trail Map (detailed information and maps from NY State Parks site).  Last Sunday, I explored the Bear Mountain trails relying on the information I’ve read on the web and the digital map … Continue reading Avenza PDF Maps App

TNF Endurance Challenge – Bear Mountain

Saturday – April 30, 2016. Synopsis.  I’ve done this last year.  I’ve forgotten how difficult it was.  Now, I remember. The Event – Overview.  The TNF ECS Bear Mountain is one of the events in The North Face Endurance Challenge Series.  It is ranked as one that has the most difficult and technically challenging course.  There are 4 races in today’s event – the 50M (which started at 5am), the 50K (this event), the Marathon and Marathon-Relay (which starts at a later time). Weather.  Saturday’s weather was pleasant and comfortable – cool temps, calm winds, and not a single drop … Continue reading TNF Endurance Challenge – Bear Mountain

TNF Endurance Challenge – Bear Mountain

May 2, 2015 This is a very tough course, with challenging terrain from start to finish.  Images from the web don’t do justice in showing how tough the course is.  You need to be there to know it.  You need to see and experience the hands-first ascents and the pray-you-don’t-tumble descents.  The organizer made sure the course has everything a trail runner would look forward to – roots, rocks, boulders, stream crossings, fallen trees, logs, and more rocks.  With this, I invite you to do this race.  No matter what distance you choose, you will have a very rewarding experience in … Continue reading TNF Endurance Challenge – Bear Mountain
