Petrified Forest National Park – In Pictures

What’s so special about dead woods?, I said to myself. They’re just woods, broken in pieces, preserved in time. Until I’ve touched them … Dumbfounded, I blurted… These ain’t just woods!

Date established:  December 8, 1906 as a National Monument.  December 9, 1962 as a National Park.

Date of visit:  December 16, 2018.

The scenic road on the park is 28 miles from the northern entrance, Painted Desert, to the southern entrance, Rainbow Museum.  It was leisure driving at its best.  It would have been nice to have a top-down and let the breeze flow as you drive on this road, listening to some old-fashioned music.

But Petrified Forest National Park is not just a scenic drive.  Backcountry hiking into the wilderness is allowed.  Explore and find your own trails.  Not just for me, on this road trip.  This is the last of the National Parks on my list on this journey.

The petrified woods, yes.  What about them?  I thought they were just regular woods preserved in time.   Until I’ve touched them.  I was dumbfounded.  Are they really just woods?  Are they rocks pretending to be woods to fool the termites who would think of a feast?  And who the hell has the mighty tool to cut them in pieces, evenly? 🙂

And on a more serious crazy thought… Will the future generation find petrified humans millions years from now?
