Capitol Reef National Park – In Pictures

If you want solitude, go to a place where the landscape is sculpted by wind, water, and time.

Date established: December 18, 1971

Date of visit: December 9-10, 2018

I was alone on the trail, trying to get to Cassidy Arch to hopefully get some of the loot he had accumulated and hidden over the years.  Boy, did I get lost…  I saw the marker, but I just went past it.  And I kept walking… and walking…  aimlessly.  Until I realized I was just walking for quite some time.  And I was getting hungry… Not good.  This was supposedly a short and easy hike.  So I traced my steps back until I reached the marker again.  Ah, I should have gone there.  Does not look like a trail, but yup, it was a trail.  And when I finally reached the arch, there was nothing left.  All the goodies have been taken, eon years ago.  All that was left was the arch, and a view of the capitol dome.  Bummer.

I only spent a night at Capitol Reef and stayed at the nearest town, Torrey.  Upon my arrival, I drove on Fruita Scenic Dr to Capitol Gorge, and hiked the trails to see the Golden Throne, and the Pioneer Register.  Watched the sunset at Sunset Point before calling it a day.

On the 2nd day, I went to hike the trail to see the Cassidy Arch.  It was just a short hike.  Supposedly.  Until I got lost.  Finally found the right trail to the arch.  After the hike, it was time to leave for the next adventure.  But not before stopping for another short hike to see the Hickman’s Bridge, and of course, the Capitol Dome, which is how the park got it’s name.
