Barkley Fall Classic – 2019 Edition

September 21, 2019 Focus on what you have … Prologue. The first sign that this day was going to be great was this – You were following the long line of vehicles slowly moving to get to the event’s parking lot. You were the last one allowed to get in. The rest was directed to the park’s parking lot, which was half-a-mile away. And having a small car, you got the best parking space next to the event’s staging tent. Score! Then, while putting everything on, and prepping for the start, you realized you missed your supplementary nutrition – your … Continue reading Barkley Fall Classic – 2019 Edition

Whiteface Sky Race

July 21, 2019. Still the hardest short distance race I have ever done. 15 miles with 8k feet of elevation gain. And most of that 8k feet of elevation gain comes from under 5 miles of ascent. 2.3 miles climb up Whiteface Mtn with 3.3k feet gain, then 2.3 miles down back to the base. Twice. Oh yes, you get a break in between. 5+ miles to recover on a considerably flatter trail. 5+ miles to ponder whether the body is still willing to go up that 2.3 miles again, and 2.3 down. 2 years ago, I did this event. … Continue reading Whiteface Sky Race

Breakneck Point Marathon

September 8, 2018. New Date. New Venue. New Course. Same Level of Difficulty. New Date. This event was in April in 2017. Because of scheduled trail maintenance in the area in the early part of the year, the date was moved to September in 2018. We actually got a break from weather this year. The whole week prior to race day was a torturous heatwave. There was a day when I had to stop a scheduled run after just a mile and walked back home because I was already soaking and uncomfortable. Mother nature gave us the blessing on race … Continue reading Breakneck Point Marathon

Manitou’s Revenge 54 Mile Ultra

June 23-24, 2018. MR54 Mile Ultra. “Does it make it easier the second time around?” Hell, No! “Does it make is sweeter the second time around?” Oh Yeah! I’ve done this last year – read the experience here. The goal this year is the same goal I’ve set last year. I didn’t achieve the goal last year, but was happy to have finished without any injuries. Would it be different this year? MR54 – a point-to-point 54.3 mile ultra from Windham, NY @ CD Lane Park to Phoenicia, NY @ downtown Parish Hall, traversing the technical trails of the Long … Continue reading Manitou’s Revenge 54 Mile Ultra

MMT 100

May 19, 2018. MMT 100 – A race against cut-offs, Poop-athon, and DNF. Prologue. So, are you ready for your next 100? A question I asked myself on Thursday, on the way to Virginia for MMT 100. I said to myself, that’s a question I would have the answer on Sunday, May 20, 2018. Start. The race starts on Saturday, 4AM and ends on Sunday, 4PM – a 36 hour cut-off for a 100 103+ mile race. With bad weather the whole week leading up to Saturday, the course would be unforgiving. True enough, the moment we stepped outside the … Continue reading MMT 100

TNF Bear Mtn 50K

May 5, 2018.  The North Face Endurance Challenge – Bear Mtn 50K Before the start… “I want to finish this in ___ hours” At the first aid station… “I feel great. I can definitely finish this in ___ hours” At some point in the middle of the race, when the body starts complaining… “Hmmm, maybe I can still finish this in ___ hours” More miles and time after, when the walking becomes more than running… “It’s alright, I am still within my backup goal of ___ hours” And some more miles later, when everything hurts, and the mind began to … Continue reading TNF Bear Mtn 50K

Escarpment Trail – DNS

July 30, 2017. Escarpment Trail Run. I was registered to run. DNS (Did Not Start). But no regrets. I sprained my left ankle last Saturday, July 22. It’s healing well, so far. Applying cold treatment and ankle brace daily. Doing regular walks for a week, hobbling at first and getting better each day. Hoping to become a-ok for the race. Undecided to do the race until the very last minute. My friend, Jun, and I still went to the North-South Lake Campground on Saturday, July 29, for an overnight stay. We hiked on Saturday, testing my foot if it can … Continue reading Escarpment Trail – DNS

Whiteface Sky Race

which is more difficult? the heart pounding and lung busting steep ascent? where you will stop. more than once. to catch your breath. or the toe killing and quad trashing slippery descent? where you will slide. more than once. and you have to make sure it’s butt first. July 9, 2017. Whiteface Sky Race. 15.2 miles. 8000 feet vertical gain. The course description from the event website accurately describes this race.   And it’s worth repeating that most of the ascent comes from the 2.3 mile climb to the summit in the Alpine loop. The climb itself was not technically challenging. … Continue reading Whiteface Sky Race

Manitou’s Revenge Ultramarathon

They say you must be partially, if not fully, insane to do this race.  And whatever sanity you have had before the race, the devil would have taken it when you traversed its path. By the time you have finished the 4 summits of the Devil’s Path, you would be totally numb and void of sanity to finish the last 10+ miles of the course. June 17, 2017.  Manitou’s Revenge Ultramarathon.  And from the event’s website, in all caps. “THIS IS NOT LIKE ANY OTHER ULTRA YOU’VE RUN BEFORE!“. Prologue.   This was the reason why I chose to defer … Continue reading Manitou’s Revenge Ultramarathon
